About Dr. Aasma Shaukat
Dr. Aasma Shaukat is an epidemiologist, clinical researcher, and gastroenterologist whose work has reshaped colorectal-cancer screening worldwide. As the Robert M. and Mary H. Glickman Professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, she directs GI Outcomes Research and serves as Section Chief of Gastroenterology at the VA NY Harbor (Manhattan).
Her landmark studies—including the 30-year follow-up of the Minnesota Fecal Occult Blood Trial—demonstrated sustained mortality reduction from screening and informed U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines. In 2021, she was appointed to the USPSTF, where she helps craft national recommendations on cancer prevention and primary care policy.
Dr. Shaukat has authored 190+ peer-reviewed papers, leads multicenter trials on stool-DNA and blood-based assays, and champions colonoscopy quality indicators adopted by ASGE and ACG. Passionate about equity, she designs interventions to improve screening in underserved communities across Brooklyn and beyond.
